ABOUT THE WINERY

Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800's by Carlo Vietti. The estate has gradually grown over the course of time, and today the vineyard holdings include some of the most highly-prized terroirs within the Barolo and Barbaresco winegrowing areas.

Although they had been making wine for four generations, the turning point came at the end of the 1950's when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, whose intuitions - from the production of one of the first Barolo crus (1961 - Rocche di Castiglione), through the single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) to the invention of Artist Labels (1974) - made him both symbol and architect of some of the most significant revolutions of the time.

Alfredo's intellectual, professional and prospective legacy was carried on by son-in-law Mario Cordero and later, in the early 1990’s, by his son Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena Penna, who contributed to the success of the Vietti brand - universally recognized today as being one of the very finest Italian wine labels - by continuing along the path of the pursuit of quality, considered experimentation and working for expansion and consolidation internationally.

In 2016 the winery was acquired by the Krause family, enabling Vietti to add a number of prized Barolo and Barbaresco crus to the estate’s holdings.  Additional vineyards in the Colli Tortonesi area were purchased for the production of Timorasso, which started with the 2019 vintage.

WINES

VIETTI ROERO ARNEIS DOCG

In 1967 Alfredo Currado, enologist and owner of the Vietti winery in the mid-20th century, was the first to re-introduce Arneis during a time when the grape was being abandoned due to its difficult nature or was often used for blending. It was also known as "Nebbiu Blanc" or white Nebbiolo up until this point in time.  Today Alfredo Currado is fondly known as the "father of Arneis" and in the half century since then, Arneis has spread to around 2,400 acres of vineyards, mostly in Piedmont.

VIETTI DERTHONA TIMORASSO COLLI TORTONESI DOC

Hailing from northern Piedmont, Timorasso has long been thought an interesting native varietal with exceptional aging and evolutionary potential.  After several years of experimentation and collaboration with local winemakers in the Derthona area of Colli Tortonesi, Vietti was  proud to release their first vintage of Derthona Timorasso with the 2018 vintage.

VIETTI “TRE VIGNE” BARBERA D’ASTI DOCG

The spiritual home of Barbera is in the Monferrato hills of Asti province east of the Langhe. Vietti sources Barbera grapes from three vineyards (tre vigne) in the Grand Cru area of Asti - specifically two separate areas of the La Crena vineyard and one adjacent to La Crena - for complexity and full expression.

VIETTI “TRE VIGNE” BARBERA D’ALBA DOC

In southern Piedmont, Nebbiolo is the prestige grape variety, but Barbera is the variety that is most planted and that, for many, pays the bills. People drink Barbera more often than Nebbiolo, partly because of the price differential and also because it is easier to drink when first released.  Vietti’s “Tre Vigne” Barbera d’Alba is sourced from three of the most distinctive vineyards (tre vigne) including Scarrone in Castiglione in the Langhe area around Barolo and the city of Alba.

VIETTI BARBERA D’ASTI LA CRENA DOCG

The La Crena vineyard, in the commune of Agliano Terme south of Asti, is near the heart of the respected Barbera d’Asti denomination. Here in the Monferrato hills, Vietti sources the grapes for its single-vineyard Barbera d’Asti DOCG from old vines planted in 1932, which were purchased by the winery in 1996.

VIETTI BARBERA D'ALBA VIGNA SCARRONE DOC

The fruit for Vigna Scarrone comes from a single cru vineyard planted to Barbera in one of the most famous sites for Barolo in Castiglione Falletto. Vigna Scarrone is truly a great wine that stands on its own and shows the potential and full expression of Barbera in the "land of Barolo."

VIETTI BARBERA D’ALBA SCARRONE VIGNA VECCHIA DOC

Not only is Scarrone Vigna Vecchia a single-vineyard wine - from the Scarrone vineyard close to the winery in Castiglione Falletto - but it’s from only the oldest vines in that vineyard. Planted in 1918, these vines are most likely the oldest vines of Barbera planted in Barolo and they produce the richest, most complex grapes, which translates into a wine of exceptional depth.  Over the years this wine has established its reputation as one of the finest Barberas made and has a cult following.

VIETTI “TRE VIGNE” DOLCETTO D’ALBA DOC

Dolcetto is the lightest of the three primary red grape varieties of Piedmont and an "every day wine" for the Piemontese.  The Vietti “Tre Vigne” Dolcetto d’Alba is sourced from three vineyards (tre vigne) in Monforte d’Alba, Novello and Castiglione Falletto - all of which are in the area around Barolo and the city of Alba.  Given the provenance of the grapes for this Dolcetto, it tends to be more intense and focused then many others.

VIETTI “PERBACCO” LANGHE NEBBIOLO DOC

Fondly known to many as a "baby Barolo", Perbacco is always 100% Nebbiolo sourced from some of the fifteen different Grand Cru vineyards in Barolo. Recently the winery started using a small portion of grapes from its vineyards in Barbaresco as part of the blend as well.  Each Cru is vinified separately, aged for two years in oak (as with the Barolo) and then a selection is made for expression of the vintage and then blended together.  An incredible value, Perbacco is intended to show the full complexity of the zone and the Nebbiolo varietal to novice and seasoned wine lovers alike.

VIETTI “CASTIGLIONE” BAROLO DOCG

Vietti’s Castiglione Barolo is the primary Barolo produced by the winery. It is named after Castiglione Falletto, the commune where the Vietti winery is situated, but it contains grapes from a careful selection of the best 15 Grand Cru of the Barolo zone (Bricco Fiasco, Bussia, Fossati and Ravera, to name a few) all located around Castiglione Falletto. Truly a remarkable expression of Barolo year after year, it's also a remarkable value.

VIETTI BAROLO BRUNATE DOCG

Brunate is one of the most famous sections of the Barolo denomination, located in La Morra.  Vietti's Barolo from this historic vineyard demonstrates elegance and finesse, with more fruit and a good weight on the palate. The 2019 vintage is made with organic grapes.

VIETTI BAROLO CEREQUIO DOCG

Of the great and historic geographical indications in the Barolo production area, Cerequio has always been at the very top of the territories of excellence.  By allowing the distinctive features of this cru to lead the way, the winery was able to obtain a wine of rare elegance and balance.  With an articulated and complex bouquet even when young, it expresses itself through a significant streak of tannins, supporting an enveloping and persistent structure. The 2019 vintage was made with organic grapes.

VIETTI BAROLO LAZZARITO DOCG

Located at a top of hill near Serralunga, the Lazzarito vineyard is a historic site long known for its fresh air and favorable exposition. Located in the Eastern part of the Barolo region, wines from this vineyard are known more for their “masculine” style - powerful and true to the territory. The 2019 vintage is made with organic grapes.

VIETTI BAROLO MONVIGLIERO DOCG

Although the historical records of the Langhe area have always singled out the terroir of the small village of Verduno as one of the most naturally suited to creating remarkable wine, it is only in the last decade that a dedicated narrative has begun to emerge.  This has helped to increase the attention and interest shown in Monvigliero. The area boasts loose, light-coloured soil in which the Nebbiolo variety truly comes into its own in a unique way, requiring special winemaking methods (whole-bunch fermentation) to best express its inimitable character. The 2019 vintage was made with organic grapes

VIETTI BAROLO RAVERA DOCG

The Ravera vineyard is located in Novello and is known for producing wines with higher acidity, which results with a vibrancy and mid-weight on the palate.  Extremely age-worthy, Vietti's Barolo Ravera is powerful, yet elegant.  The 2019 vintage is made with organic grapes.

VIETTI BAROLO ROCCHE DI CASTIGLIONE DOCG

From the area of Castiglione Falletto, Rocche is arguably one of the best Grand Cru vineyard sites in the Barolo zone.  The Vietti Barolo Rocche is known for its power, elegance and great potential for aging. With the 2019 vintage the wine is certified organic.

VIETTI BAROLO RISERVA DOCG

The idea of the Barolo Riserva was born during the continuous experimentations carried out both in the vineyards and in the cellar, for the choice of grapes that will be used for the Barolo Castiglione. Throughout the years, some very high-quality vineyard plots have drawn the attention of the team during harvest. The grapes from those plots were set aside and vinified and aged separately. In 2023, the Vietti Barolo DOCG Riserva was born with the 2015 vintage, with grapes coming from vineyards in the Castiglione Falletto commune. For the 2016 the selection came from Serralunga. The 2016 also sees some whole-cluster fermentation, and aged 24 months in large casks, maturing in the bottle for 60 months.

VIETTI BAROLO VILLERO RISERVA DOCG

Vietti’s Villero Riserva is an outstanding wine even by Vietti’s and Barolo’s standards. It is made only in the best vintages—just ten times in the last 31 years. The grapes come from the Villero vineyard and the wine gets the extra aging required for Riserva status, remaining in the cellars for more than 5 years before release. For each vintage, the winery selects a special work of art for the label. The 2013 features the work of Alessandro Piangiamore, a Sicilian artist born in 1976. For this "surprising" Villero vintage the artist select  Una Tigre alla Menta - A Mint Tiger, reflecting elegance and aggressive at the same time.

VIETTI BARBARESCO RISERVA RABAJÀ DOCG

Rabajà represents one of the most important MGA vineyards in Barbaresco. This historic vineyard sits southwest in an amphitheater above Martinenga, in the commune of Barbaresco. Vietti owns just short of one acre of Rabajà, which they produce only a Barbaresco Riserva. It is a return for Vietti, who was producing Rabajà in the 1980s.

VIETTI RONCAGLIE BARBARESCO DOCG

Though rightly considered a Barolo expert, Vietti produces top-quality wines from all over southern Piedmont, including Barolo’s friendly rival Barbaresco. This wine is from the single vineyard Roncaglie in the Barbaresco denomination. Roncaglie comes from the Latin word roncaleis, which was the name of a former Roman settlement and means "steep road." Besides being excellent in its own right, Vietti Barbaresco presents an extraordinary opportunity to taste this wine alongside a single-vineyard Barolo produced by the same winery under similar conditions in order to experience the two great Nebbiolo denominations with as few variables as possible. Previous to 2018, this wine was just called Masseria. With the 2020 vintage the word Masseria was removed from the label.

VIETTI FREISA VIVACE LANGHE DOC

Freisa is a little-seen grape variety typical of southern Piedmont, and Vietti’s Langhe Freisa Vivace is definitely not a run-of-the-mill red wine. After a relatively normal initial fermentation, Vietti adds some unfermented juice that was held back after crushing to the finished wine, then bottles the mixture. The sugar in the juice begins a new fermentation in the bottle, although there is variation between bottles, so the resulting sweetness-effervescence balance is not always the same. This is somewhat similar to sparkling wine production, but the amount of sugar involved is much less, so the final wine is just a bit fizzy (vivace, lively)—and, of course, red.

VIETTI MOSCATO D'ASTI DOCG

The Vietti Moscato comes from the family’s estate in Castglione Tinella and is made with the same care and attention as the still wines.  They use a selection of older vines from the estate, green harvest, and the traditional fermentation process with a closed-top tank and natural fermentation for two to three weeks.

JANUARY 2023
Vietti Barolo Ravera DOCG 2018

This wine's robust red cherry and berry flavors surge through taut, ferrous tannins, maintaining a cool elegance as the wine fleshes out with exposure to air. Girded by a tarry undertone, the flavors are impressively precise, the tannins finely chiseled, the aromas exuberant and fresh.

MAY 2023
Vietti Roncaglie Barbaresco DOCG 2019

A translucent ruby, the 2019 Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria is beautiful and elegant in its perfume, with rosehip, rhubarb, and pomegranate. It is medium-bodied and a little restrained at the moment, but it has fine, present tannins and notes of sandy earth, cranberry, dried roses, and saline. Allow it another year in bottle and drink over the coming 10-15 years.

Vietti Barbera d’Asti La Crena DOCG 2018

The Vietti 2018 Barbera d'Asti La Crena sees its fruit sourced from very old vines with some of the plants approaching the 100-year-old mark. This is a rich and darkly concentrated wine with a lovely bouquet that is lifted and bright. The wine reveals dark cherry fruit, raw blackberry and plum. That opulent, old-vine fruit drowns out much of the acidic sharpness of the grape. Some 10,000 bottles were crafted.

Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione DOCG 2018

This is one of my sweetheart wines from Castiglione Falletto. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with an especially delineated quality that is uncommon in this vintage. Fruit comes from a small 8,000-square-meter parcel, and like the other wines in this cru series from Vietti, it ages in oak casks for two years. The wine's texture is beautifully smooth and polished thanks to the carefully integrated tannins. Only 3,693 bottles were made.

Vietti Roero Arneis DOCG 2018

"This is always such a delicious wine and one I could imagine pairing with a Thai salad or grilled shrimp. The 2018 Roero Arneis opens to fragrant aromas with spring flower, cut grass and white peach. This is a lean-bodied white with a bright, tonic and zesty personality."

Vietti “Castiglione” Barolo DOCG 2020

Racy and focused. I like the aromas of lavender, violet and white roses alongside strawberry, cranberry and stone. Medium body, with firm and fine tannins that are long and succulent. It’s fine and polished. Vegan. Needs three to four years to come together.

JUNE 2021
Vietti Barolo Brunate DOCG 2017

A release of 4,981 bottles, the Vietti 2017 Barolo Brunate is beautifully rich and fleshed out, with balanced fruit weight and inner structure. The bouquet reveals tart cherry and cassis, but the Brunate also shows a more delicate side, with crushed flowers, dried violet and polished stone. The power of this cru creeps up on the palate, where you feel the tightness of its fiber and tannins. Following that delicate aromatic preface, this Barolo ultimately delivers a strong, cellar-worthy performance.
