Beautiful, sweet fruit and perfumes on the nose with fresh flowers, such as roses. Full-bodied with fine, dusty tannins and a long, persistent finish. Very caressing. Builds on the palate at the end. Drink after 2024.

Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800's by Carlo Vietti. The estate has gradually grown over the course of time, and today the vineyard holdings include some of the most highly-prized terroirs within the Barolo and Barbaresco winegrowing areas.
Although they had been making wine for four generations, the turning point came at the end of the 1950's when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, whose intuitions - from the production of one of the first Barolo crus (1961 - Rocche di Castiglione), through the single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) to the invention of Artist Labels (1974) - made him both symbol and architect of some of the most significant revolutions of the time.
Alfredo's intellectual, professional and prospective legacy was carried on by son-in-law Mario Cordero and later, in the early 1990’s, by his son Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena Penna, who contributed to the success of the Vietti brand - universally recognized today as being one of the very finest Italian wine labels - by continuing along the path of the pursuit of quality, considered experimentation and working for expansion and consolidation internationally.
In 2016 the winery was acquired by the Krause family, enabling Vietti to add a number of prized Barolo and Barbaresco crus to the estate’s holdings. Additional vineyards in the Colli Tortonesi area were purchased for the production of Timorasso, which started with the 2019 vintage.

Vietti Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone DOC 2019
![]() The 2019 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone is stunning. Deep, layered and silky, the Scarrone is exceptional. All the elements are so well balanced. Plush dark fruit, mocha, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha come together in a Barbera that dazzles from start to finish. The 2019 is one of the best in recent memory. 91

Vietti Freisa Vivace Langhe DOC 2020
![]() The 2020 Langhe Freisa Vivace has deliberate effervescence and is fresh with black-berried fruit, rosemary, and a lightly rustic touch of turned soil and pepper. This is the traditional method for producing these wines, as a small bit of CO2 preserved the wines. It is a lovely wine to have alongside salumi, but readers should not be taken aback by its lively mouthfeel. It is also not to be confused with more wild natural wines. Fresh with red berries, black berries, and crunchy red plums, it is drinking beautifully now and will continue to drink well over the next several years. 96
FEBRUARY 2022
Vietti Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2018
![]() Readers will note the addition of two new wines that have been thrilling since the first day I tasted them. The first is from a choice parcel in Cerequio Vietti acquired from Michele Chiarlo. The new Monvigliero is made in conjunction with Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac and has some whole cluster influence. As much as I hope stems don't become a trend in Piedmont like French oak barrels did in the 1990s, there is little question whole clusters seem to work especially well in Monvigliero. These wines are simply brilliant. There. The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero, another new wine in this range, is dazzling. That's not much of a surprise, as the 2018 has always been gorgeous from barrel. A touch of whole clusters adds aromatic nuance and lift to this super-classic, sculpted Barolo. The Monvigliero impresses with its purity, delineation and class. Superb. 96

Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione DOCG 2018
![]() The 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is suave, silky and caressing right out of the gate. Sumptuous and racy, with silky tannins, the Rocche possesses superb depth and plenty of resonance that builds over time. The 2018 is an especially potent Rocche that is going to need a number of years to unwind. 95
JUNE 2022
Vietti Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2018
![]() Here's a very special treat from Verduno and one of the most exciting new releases we will see from Italy this year. In its inaugural release, the Vietti 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is made with 60% whole cluster fruit, following in time-honored local tradition. The soils of Monvigliero are loose and light in color, producing tight but lean-bodied wines. The use of whole clusters gives the wine more texture, intensity and tannins. With wild berry, rose, dried mint and white licorice and very fine and smooth tannins, this wine is part of a precious 3,207-bottle production. 91
JULY 2020
Vietti Roero Arneis DOCG 2019
![]() Vietti's 2019 Roero Arneis is fresh, zesty and upfront. This delightfully informal white wine lays it all out there, and there's a lot to love. The Arneis grape reveals glossy, polished aromas in which citrus and peach are offset by a touch of squeaky natural rubber. I happen to love those aromas. Vietti offers a very clean and authentic expression of the variety. If you're new to Arneis, this is a good place to start. 94
JUNE 2021
Vietti Barolo Lazzarito DOCG 2017
![]() A release of 8,760 bottles, the Vietti 2017 Barolo Lazzarito draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba and reveals a luminous garnet color. Compared to some of the others in this portfolio, the wine takes a little longer to open and express itself. It does, however, unfold to dark cherry, redcurrant, grilled herb, iron ore and candied orange peel. You need to give your glass a few extra vigorous swirls. Those rusty mineral notes build in intensity and drive the wine's medium-long finish. |
