ABOUT THE WINERY

In 1970, Siro established the Pelagrilli estate with a few small hectares of Brunello vines in the Canalicchio district north and east of the village of Montalcino. Pelagrilli has since become the seat of the Siro Pacenti winery and vine plantings on this site have grown to encompass 15 hectares of Sangiovese Grosso.

Siro’s son, Giancarlo, assumed control of the winery in 1988 and oversaw the family’s first major investment in winery equipment and cellar hygiene after returning from his studies in Bordeaux.  In 1990, Giancarlo expanded the holdings of the Siro Pacenti winery with the purchase of Piancornello vineyard in the southeast of Montalcino, which is home to vines planted in the 1960’s by his maternal grandfather. Here, the gravelly soils and southerly position compliment Pelagrilli’s sandy-clay soil and cooler growing environment. The historic plantings at Pelagrilli and Piancornello together make Siro Pacenti one the appellation’s largest owners of Sangiovese vines aged 40 years or greater, comprising roughly 1/5 of Montalcino’s total 40+ year-old plantings.

Today, Giancarlo carries on his family’s legacy with the maximum of precision and attention to detail. Farming practices are sustainable and massal selection from the estate’s oldest parcels supply vine material for new plantings. Meticulous selection in the vineyard brings top quality fruit to the cellar where it is passed through an optical sorter and individual berries are again sorted by hand both pre and post destemming. This helps to explain why the winery produces an average volume of 66,000 bottles per year even though Brunello DOCG regulations would allow upwards of 100,000 bottles from the same number of vines.

In the cellar, fermentations favor minimal intervention apart from temperature stability to allow for slow and gentle extraction. A combination of stainless steel and concrete vats are used for vinification, after which the young wines are transferred to barrel. Giancarlo’s use of barriques for maturation runs counter to the common wisdom that small barrels overshadow the elegance of Sangiovese. Every wine in Giancarlo’s cellar includes components that have passed through new French barriques, yet his wines are known to be among the most elegant and pure expressions of Sangiovese available.

The Siro Pacenti label on a bottle of wine represents an uncompromising approach to winemaking and preservation of rare vines planted at the dawn of Brunello’s golden age.

WINES

SIRO PACENTI ROSSO DI MONTALCINO DOC

Siro Pacenti Rosso di Montalcino is produced with great care from vines aged 15-25 years. Following a rigorous selection by optical sorter, the fruit is destemmed and sorted again before a brief cold maceration. Vinification in steel and concrete lasts about 4 weeks and is followed by 12 months in new French barrique before bottling. A wine of purity and depth rarely encountered in the Rosso category, Siro Pacenti Rosso di Montalcino averages 15,000 bottles per year, or roughly 20% of the winery’s total production.

SIRO PACENTI PELAGRILLI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG

Pelagrilli is the name of the original vineyard purchased by Siro in 1970 as well as the name of the winery’s flagship Brunello. Originally made with only grapes from the Pelagrilli vineyard, it now includes grapes from both Pelagrilli and the newer Piancornello vineyard located in the southern part of the appellation. The winery only uses grapes from vines that are between 25-40 years old. The winery’s banner item, "Pelagrilli" receives delicate attention on the sorting table (in multiple tries) and in the cellar. Pelagrilli walks the razor’s edge between elegance and power with uncommon depth and complexity.

SIRO PACENTI VECCHIE VIGNE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG

As its name suggests, Vecchie Vigne arises from the historic sections of the Pelagrilli and Piancornello vineyards. It is sourced from vines aged 40-60 years in both the Pelagrilli vineyard and the Piancornello vineyard in Montalcino’s southeast. Berries are selected in multiple passes, before and after destemming, through an optical sorter. The wine is aged in custom-made French barriques for 24 months followed by two months in concrete and a final 22 months matured in the bottle. Vecchie Vigne is precise, pronounced, dense, and balanced, this is convincing old-vine Sangiovese.

SIRO PACENTI PS BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG RISERVA

A rare and unforgettable wine, PS Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is only made in exceptional vintages. 100% of the fruit is sourced from the original parcel of vines at Pelagrilli, north of Montalcino village. Rigorous sorting of the berries produced by the already low-yielding vines resulted in just 1,800 bottles of wine in the 2019 vintage. 30 months in custom-made French barriques was followed by 2 months in concrete and 24 months in bottle. The winery did not produce another Riserva until the 2022 vintage, which will be ready for release in 2028.

Siro Pacenti PS Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva 2016

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva PS is impossible to ignore, as a burst of mentholated black cherries mixes with notes of crushed stone, sage, smoking embers and a hint of spiced orange. Pure in style yet silken in feel, it offers red berry fruits that cascade across the palate as a jolt of zesty acidity lifts the experience. Structured and dramatically long, the 2016 tapers off with a saturation of fine tannins and a pleasantly bitter tinge of dark chocolate that lingers. It’s a dark beast of a Brunello.

Siro Pacenti Vecchie Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020

Made with fruit from the estate's oldest vines and aged in French barrique, the Siro Pacenti 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne has a spicy note with cardamom or cinnamon over a bold bouquet that is darkly enriched with all kinds of black and purple fruits. You get a hint of eucalyptus or rosemary that underlines a medicinal side to this wine. To the palate, this vintage is slightly more accessible for sure, but the house style prizes concentration and bold tannic structure that will give you runway for aging. There is a hint of dustiness or chalkiness on the tannins. This is a 16,000-bottle release.

Siro Pacenti Vecchie Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is remarkably pretty, with a bright bouquet of rose petals, ground clove, dusty earth and wild strawberry. It is round and soothingly soft-textured, with a wave of saline minerals to balance as brisk acidity excites its tart wild berry fruit. This wine reverberates with zesty tension, long and intense, with edgy tannins and a saturation of primary concentration that lingers. The future is very bright, as the 2013 is just starting to come out of its shell.

Siro Pacenti Vecchie Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is a total pleasure to the senses. A whiff of tobacco and dried herbs complicates black cherries and hints of cedary spice. Silken in feel, it presents tart red and black fruits guided by brisk acidity, while a crisp mineral tinge adds form toward the close. It leaves a pleasantly bitter saturation of dark chocolate and a coating of fine tannins, finishing with excellent length.

Siro Pacenti PS Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva 2019

Siro Pacenti Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2023

This graceful and perfumed wine shows aromas of toast, licorice, vanilla, pomegranates, violets and cinnamon. Its restrained character is improved by fruit concentration and weight, a full body, crisp acidity and well-handled, velvety tannins. Drinkable now, but best from spring 2025.
