ABOUT THE PRODUCER

In 1948 Fernuccio di Bernard established Distilleria dell’Alpe in Bastia d’Alpago, a small hillside village in the sweeping Cansiglio forest of the Eastern Italian Alps.  One of the first artisanal producers of Italian gin, Fernuccio deeply understood the traditional nature of spirits, but he also was an innovator and craftsman. Among the many products he created, he patented an enigmatic juniper-based liqueur, Kapriol, commonly known as a Distillato del Bosco or a “distillate of the forest.” Authentic, delicious, and undeniably unique, Kapriol became an iconic spirit for the region.

In 2002 the Maschio family, historical Prosecco and Grappa producers from the nearby town of Conegliano, purchased Distilleria dell’Alpe with the intention of developing a variety of liqueurs and traditional spirits of the area. They quickly revived the original Kapriol Classico liqueur from 1948 as well as another of de Bernard’s signature recipes, the remarkable Rosen Bitter, an aperitivo originally created in 1951.

In 2016 the family created the Kapriol Gin portfolio (Gin Artiginiale Italiano) to meet the growing interest and demand for artisan Gin in Italy and internationally. Based on the original and historic 1948 recipes for the Kapriol Classico liqueur and Forestal Dry Gin, Distilleria dell’Alpe was uniquely positioned to produce a spectrum of classic and contemporary styles. Using high quality, all-natural ingredients, master distiller Alessandro Maschio uses the pot stills from the original distillery to carry out the very recipes and techniques that have been used for three quarters of a century at Distilleria dell’Alpe.

KAPRIOL GRAPEFRUIT & HIBISCUS GIN

Kapriol Grapefruit & Hibiscus Gin was first produced in 2019. Like the other Kapriol Gins, it is based on the original 1948 recipe of the Kapriol Liqueur. Hibiscus flowers and pink grapefruit are sourced from southern Italy. The botanicals are first infused for 15 days,  in a wheat  based alcohol. Distillation in copper pot stills from 1947, built by artisan Antonio Padovan. Try it over ice with a dry tonic and an orange zest.

KAPRIOL SLOE GIN ARTIGIANALE ITALIANO

Kapriol Sloe Gin was first produced in 2019. Like the other Kapriol Gins, it is based on the original 1948 recipe of the Kapriol Liqueur. The Sloe Gin is distinguished by lower alcohol and a pleasant sweetness on the palate. The history of Sloe Gin dates back to the 1700s. Sloe berries, which are tart and astringent, are not especially good for eating. But steeping them in gin allows the fruit flavors to blossom.
