Cellar Selection. Beautiful classic aromas of mixed cherries, tobacco, warmed spices and bay leaf enchant the senses. The refined and elegant palate offers a blend of warmed fruit and density, with an earthy, well-structured and mineral-driven finish. Drink from 2025–2045.
The 2021 Barbera D'Alba Vigna Vecchia Scarrone comes from the old vines of the Scarrone vineyard that were planted in 1918 and wrap around to the south-facing hillside. It’s quite an expressive wine, taking on tremendous depth and complexity, although it’s very appealing now as well. A purple/magenta color, it offers aromas of graphite, candied blackberries, lavender, and rosemary. It’s rich and full-bodied but has a weightless feel, with plush, velvety tannins, and it retains fantastic freshness of acidity. Drink 2026-2036.
This charming red is delicate and smooth, evoking cherry, boysenberry, violet and spice flavors, with superb balance and a lingering aftertaste that echoes
the main flavor themes. Best from 2025 through 2042.
The 2023 Grillo Mozia is youthfully coy yet bursting at the seams, revealing a delicate blend of chamomile, green melon and hints of candied lime. This blends savory and sweet, with ripe orchard fruits and silky textures offset by a stream of zesty acidity. Sweet herbal tones emerge toward the close. This tapers off with tremendous length and a salty tinge, leaving a green citrus resonance to gradually recede. The Mozia hails from albarello-trained vines growing in sandy soils, at and slightly below sea level. This is one of the most characterful Grillos produced in Italy today.
The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is another terrific entry-level wine from Vietti. In this vintage, the Perbacco is especially fine. Sweet dried cherry, herbs, mint, crushed flowers, anise and orange peel grace this striking, alluring Nebbiolo. There's tons of depth and sheer pedigree, things that have not always been present in recent editions. For years, Perbacco was a very serious wine - some might say almost too serious - for its peer group. Then Vietti pivoted to a simpler style. With the 2020, Perbacco seems to once again be a wine that overdelivers, big time. Quite frankly, the 2020 Perbacco is more satisfying than many Barbarescos and Barolos I tasted this year.
A burst of zesty green citrus, sour melon and wild herbal tones introduce the 2021 Sauvignon. It opens with a pleasant inner sweetness complicated by salty minerality and a core of brilliant acidity that maintains fantastic energy throughout. This finishes tense, nearly crunchy in feel, with candied lime and rosemary nuances that create a sweet and sour sensation. I love the 2021s contrasting nature. Nicely done.
Pretty violet and lavender tones give way to musky blackberries and hints of cracked chalk as the 2019 Rosso Conero Riserva Agontano opens in the glass. This cool-toned beauty shows its minerality up front, as silky textures gain grip through a mix of tart, wild berry fruits and stimulating acidity. The 2019 tapers off with lip-smacking tension and grippy tannins, yet it’s packed full of zesty energy. The Agontano is a 100% Montepulciano that’s refined in second-pass barriques. This is a really beautiful expression of the variety, one that will need a short stay in the cellar to show its best.
