JAMES SUCKLING TOP 100 ITALY 2025 - #69
Lots of violets, cola and blueberries on the nose, complemented by a clay pot note. Fascinating aromatics. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with polished tannins. A cohesive and complete wine that’s angular and incisive, with subtlety, precision and elegance. Lots of personality in each detail. It needs at least four years to soften. But what a wine.

A bright transparent red/garnet hue, the 2020 Etna Rosso Contrada Sciaranuova V.V. is more citrus driven and is the brightest and most orange-influenced in the range, with minty lift, delicate cranberries, and incense. As it opens, notes of with fine tannin and dusty earth emerge. It has the most tension, and its potential for ageing is large, but it is also the most austere. Drink 2025-2040. This wine comes from vines over 70 years old. |

A little more robust and richer on the finish, the Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Gaiun Martinenga offers aromas of cooked cherry and plum. This wine offers a darker fruit profile compared to the others, and it also shows greater structural support. There is a firm, mineral note of iron or rust that should dissolve beautifully as this wine continues its bottle aging. Production is 8,000 bottles.

Raspberry and kirsch aromas and flavors herald this aromatic red, along with iron, eucalyptus, wild herbs and spices. Impressive up front yet still needs time to resolve the assertive tannins. Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo. Best from 2028 through 2040.

Wine Spectator 37 Brunellos from Montalcino's 2020 Vintage
A dark, distinctive version that veers toward black currant and blackberry fruit, showing fine concentration and structure. Iron, earth, eucalyptus and Mediterranean scrub notes augment the fruit, delivering an anomaly for the vintage. Almost feels more like '19 than '20. Best from 2028 through 2045.
