A rich plum and cherry sauce is offset by autumnal spice and a dusting of cocoa as the 2020 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Bellovedere comes to life. It's silky-smooth with a pretty inner sweetness balanced by zesty acidity and tart wild berry fruits as a mineral tinge adds traction toward the close. This tapers off long and staining with grippy tannins, leaving licorice and clove hints. While quite intense and verging on opulent, balance is expertly maintained.
The 2021 Rosato Madamarosè is pungently spicy yet fresh, showing wild strawberries offset by mint leaf and crushed rocks. It’s silky in feel with a wonderful contrast of sour citrus and zesty acids against ripe orchard fruits. This lingers long, leaving the palate stained in concentration, as a salty flourish slowly fades. This 100% Syrah Rosato from Sicily keeps the energy high, and me, coming back to the glass for more.
The southeastern Italian region of Puglia is often thought of as one of the most important territories for rosato in the country. Several grapes are used to produce the various styles; this one from Masseria Li Veli is produced entirely from Negroamaro. Medium-deep orange in color, this offers delightful perfumes of orange peel, currant and orange roses. There is very good acidity, which helps preserve acidity and freshness and the finish is round and quite delicious. Enjoy this over the next 2-3 years.
The 2018 Barolo Brunate is a deep, layered wine that is going to need at least a few years to come together. Today, the Brunate is quite primary and backward, but all the ingredients are there. Sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers and spice build with a bit of coaxing.
This red offers an inviting expression of cherry, raspberry, floral, mineral and spice flavors. Pure, with a firm backbone of tannins, vibrant acidity and a lingering, fruity aftertaste. Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2040.
