The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga shows all the pedigree of this great vintage in its power, breadth and overall intensity. Black cherry, plum, licorice, mocha, lavender and sage give the 2016 its dark, brooding personality. I am quite surprised, in a good way, how integrated the tannins are. The 2016 is a big wine, but it is already very harmonious, The 2016 spent a year in barrel and a year and half in cask.
Distinctly savory and spicy in the glass, the 2018 Brut Oudeis wafts up with notes of crushed stone, dusty sage, ground ginger and citrus zest. It's elegant and round on the palate, with saline minerals and brisk acidity enlivening the tart orchard fruits. This finishes with a balanced inner sweetness, and sour lemon hints add a lovely contrast. The 2018 Oudeis is a big step up from the 2017 tasted last year. It's a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay.
The 2020 Barbaresco Masseria, from vines in Roncaglie, sizzles with tension. Bright, red-toned fruit, orange peel, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, the Masseria is quite showy. That is hardly the case in 2020, a vintage in which the wine is classically austere and in need of time. Super-classic.
The 2019 Lagone is a soft, fruity Maremma red to drink now and over the next handful of years. A burst of sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and new leather lends energy to this tasty, mid-weight red. Best of all, the 2019 should be a terrific value.
Transparent and clear aromas of cherries and berries with some cedar and lavender that follow through to a medium body, with fine and round tannins and a delicious finish. Very approachable now and refined. New wine from Vietti. Try after 2027.
The 2020 Barolo Brunate is a dark, beguiling wine. Black cherry, dried herbs, leather, game, licorice and incense lend gorgeous sepia-toned nuance. Brooding and inward, the 2020 clearly needs time. It is a super-classic Brunate that is hard to read in the early going, but the weight, substance and power are clearly there. Dense, meaty and dark, the 2020 shows Serralunga-like intensity.
