The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is tightly wound and inward, with an intense mix of savory herbs, cedar shavings, ground cloves and blood orange forming its bouquet. Velvety smooth and deep, yet surprisingly vibrant, it casts masses of spiced-cherry and wild berry fruits across the palate, complicated by a hint of sour citrus. The structure emerges through the finish, impossibly long and tannic, yet still fresh, leaving a tart blackberry tinge and violet inner florals. This mixes balance and power in a wildly attractive way.

I spent a good amount of time huddled over this fantastic bottle over the course of a few days. This is another masterpiece in a long line of masterpieces from the Villero site in Castiglione Falletto that is definitely a personal MGA favorite. The Vietti 2016 Barolo Riserva Villero can be summed up in a single word: seamless. You immediately recognize the strong personalized style of the wine despite the Vietti ownership changes, although in truth this vintage was still under the guide of Luca and Elena Penna-Currado because the estate was sold in July 2016 and they stayed on to make wines for a few more years to follow. The smoothness of the wine represents a continuum across various chapters of dark fruit, roasted chestnut, iron ore, blood orange, aniseed and white truffle. It does not have the weightlessness of some of today's top Barolo; in fact, quite the opposite: this is a wine of depth, full-bodied texture and smooth transitions. Production is exactly 5,146 bottles, 330 magnums and 15 double magnums.

Verità is a true all-Italian vodka, distilled from Italian wheat and Alpine Mountain water. Exceptionally smooth and pure, in part due to its unique distillation process, Verità is distilled four times, with the final distillation taking place in an antique, wood-fired bain marie still.

This aromatic red delivers cherry, raspberry and boysenberry flavors alongside balsamic notes of eucalyptus, juniper and wild herbs. Strikes a nice balance between grace and power, with firm tannins and a mineral streak underlining the long aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2046.

Coming from vines that were planted more recently and raised in 2500-liter Slavonian barrels, the 2023 Etna Bianco Contrada Sciaranuova preserves the linear nature of Carricante and is just going for longevity. Lime oils, fresh thyme, salty earth, and white peach are followed by a salty and bright white with a lovely, rounded texture, though it has focus and a crystalline clarity. Drink 2025-2037. |

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is remarkably pretty, with a bright bouquet of rose petals, ground clove, dusty earth and wild strawberry. It is round and soothingly soft-textured, with a wave of saline minerals to balance as brisk acidity excites its tart wild berry fruit. This wine reverberates with zesty tension, long and intense, with edgy tannins and a saturation of primary concentration that lingers. The future is very bright, as the 2013 is just starting to come out of its shell.
