Sour cherries, oranges, raspberries and olives on the nose, followed by a juicy, fresh and savory palate with fine a tannins and a medium body. Delicious now.
Aromas of a fresh basket of cherries, strawberries and raspberries all dripping with their own juices, leaps from the glass of this sensory overload of a wine, but in a good way). Subtle hints of rose and wild herbs emerge as the wine develops in the glass. Electric on the palate with fresh wild berries on center stage with hints of mint and savory herbs as backup and vibrant bubbles that lift the palate to ready it for the next sip. A great aperitivo, and a must with cured meats.
2022 James Suckling Top 100 Italian Wines #45.
The freshness and firmness of this young 2017 Barbaresco is impressive. The wine is tight and reserved, but suggests greatness, offering cherries, dark cherries, dried flowers and crushed stones. Intense tannins. This is a wine for the cellar. Give it five or six years of bottle age. Try after 2027.
The 2021 Rosato Susumaniello Askos is understated and dusty in character, yet with an exotic spiciness that keeps me coming back to the glass. It washes across that palate with glycerol-like textures, while delivering ripe green melon and sweet inner herbal tones. While a bit short, the Askos succeeds in leaving the senses completely refreshed and aching for another sip.
The 2019 Pinot Noir Krafuss, from a vineyard in the hills above San Michele Appiano, is impossible to ignore, with a whiff of smokey crushed stone and flowery underbrush giving way to depths of wild strawberry and shaved cedar. It’s a model of purity, seamlessly silky and lifted, with white pepper-tinged red berries and mineral underpinnings that add a distinctly savory profile toward the close. The 2019 finishes long and spicy, also lightly tannic, yet with sour citrus nuances that keep me looking back to the glass for more. Some cellaring will be required to allow all of the components here to sing in unison. What a gorgeous rendition of Krafuss.
A nebbiolo that shows lots of Mediterranean spices and herbs, together with strawberries, dried earth and minerals. A medium-bodied, textured palate, showing dried-herb savoriness on the transparent but austere center-palate. Firm, savory and dry. Drink or hold.
This is the 10 Anni Library re-release of this vintage. This is maturing nicely, with ripe, sweet black currant, blackberry and black cherry core flavors accented by spice, leather, mineral and woodsy flavors. Complex, balanced and long, with an aftertaste echoing the fruit and savory elements. Drink now through 2037. From Italy.
